LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) -As those numbers climb across the state, Southwest Louisiana has not reached the high hospitalization rate seen back in the summer. Hospitalizations may not be at their peak in Southwest Louisiana, but providers say that doesn’t mean it’s time for people to stop taking precautions.
We’re in what many are calling wave 3 of the pandemic in Louisiana, but for now, hospitalizations in region 5 are holding steady.

A new emergency treatment for COVID0-19 is now available at local hospitals for patients who aren't sick enough to be hospitalized.
Bamlanivimab, known as BAM for short, helps block COVID-19 cells from attacking the patient. It mimics the immune system to help fight off the virus in patients who test positive for coronavirus.
Timothy Haman, M.D., Vice President of Medical Affairs, CHRISTUS Ochsner Health Southwestern Louisiana told KPLC that BAM could be a life saving treatment for people that are susceptible to severe illness.
There is some controversy surrounding BAM as it was given emergency approval from the FDA and it hasn't been fully tested.  Doctors are transparent that they don't know a lot about the drug or the potential risks that it could pose to patients, although local doctors say they're seeing positive early results.

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) -- In addition to the vaccine, there’s new promise in the fight against COVID-19.
As cases and hospitalizations remain steady, a new emergency treatment is being administered in the Lake Area for COVID patients who aren’t sick enough for hospitalization.
“So the name is Bamlanivimab..and what it does is block the COVID cells from attacking you,” said Lake Charles Memorial Clinical Manager Monica Carroll.
The effort to stop the spread of COVID-19 doesn’t end with the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. The FDA gave emergency use authorization to a new monoclonal antibody treatment known as BAM for short on November 9th.

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - The first COVID-19 vaccine was administered at Christus Ochsner St. Patrick Hospital just after 4 p.m. Monday.
The vaccine came as the United States’ death toll from COVID-19 topped 300,000 Monday.
A handful of medical personnel were able to get the vaccine Monday and more medical personnel will get it Tuesday. Doctors and nurses who received the vaccine said the shot came as relief.
“I am excited, I’m thankful I haven’t gotten (COVID) this year,” said Madison Jones, a registered nurse. “Hopefully this will keep me healthy to protect my patients.”
