The Rockhampton Railyards have been sitting vacant since June 2018 after Aurizon closed the facility, leaving 181 people out of work - but plans are mounting for the site to reopen.
The 31ha site was on the agenda of the council meeting last week and was approved for variations to the planning scheme, which will pave the way for future development.
The variations allow for a mix of uses which will make a valuable addition to the employment and community fabric of the region .

A Queensland first large-scale battery energy storage system is poised to be built in the small town of Bouldercombe, near Rockhampton.
The battery storage facility takes electricity from the grid in periods of low demand and feeds it back into the grid in high demand.
The facility would have a battery storage capacity of up to 100MW/200MWh (two hours depth).
Genex Power Limited is behind the project and plans to co-locate it on Powerlink s Bouldercombe Substation on the Burnett Highway.
The development application was submitted to Rockhampton Regional Council this month by AECOM Australia.
The application describes a battery storage facility as a premises to store energy from a transmission grid or supply network into a commercial battery energy storage system . ....

PREPARATIONS to begin construction on the $353.2m Rookwood Weir project are well underway as paperwork for development permits is filed.
A development proposal has been submitted with Rockhampton Regional Council to obtain land use approval for the extraction of material from the Fitzroy River and adjoining land and on-site processing and manufacturing for the construction of Rookwood Weir.

An Allenstown home is set to be transformed into medical offices as the project awaits approval from Rockhampton Regional Council.
Gideon Town Planning submitted the application for a material change of use for health care services at 164 Fitzroy St, Allenstown.
The highset house is located between the TAFE campus and Spar on Fitzroy St.
The development proposal is to establish a medical practice on the ground floor of the existing house, plus works to the driveway and a parking area with seven car parks.
