This is an
extraordinary finish to the season we’re being treated to.
I thought we were in for a thrilling finish last week – but my expectations are being exceeded!
Liam Salter, the Crowd and I all managed scores of five points, but Dem Panopoulos roared back into form with excellent upset tips of North Melbourne and Greater Western Sydney to score seven.

That means the three of us are all level on 102 points and the Crowd is narrowly ahead on 103. It’s genuinely anyone’s game!

Covid exposure sites have AFL players 'paranoid', says Bulldogs coach

Victoria's ever-expanding number of Covid-19 exposure sites has AFL players and staff on edge, Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge says.
A long list of players and club staff, including Bulldogs midfielder Josh Dunkley, have been forced into 14-day isolation periods after unwittingly attending exposure sites this month.
Dunkley was told to isolate after visiting his local café and will miss Saturday night's clash with Melbourne.

St Kilda's Rowan Marshall and GWS star Toby Greene are also among the list of high-profile players out of action.

Kane Cornes' 2021 non-midfielder Brownlow Medal

By
2021-07-23T10:00+10:00
Kane Cornes has held his own version of the Brownlow Medal after 18 rounds of the AFL season, with the twist being that all midfielders are eligible.
Cornes feels midfielders dominate the major awards and wants other players to be rewarded.
“The top 10 vote-getters in the AFL Coaches Association award are all midfielders. The 18 AFL coaches have neglected to meaningfully recognise any defender, forward or a ruckman and it isn’t the only award dominated by midfielders,” Cornes told
SEN’s Captain’s Run.
“The umpires too have been hypnotised into only voting for the mids when they hand in their 3-2-1 Brownlow votes after each game.

We have ourselves quite the finish coming up.
Sure, what actually takes place on the field will be intriguing – but how about the tipping race!
After leading all season, Dem Panopoulos is faltering at the crucial hurdles; his score of four (following a two last week) means he now sits two points adrift of both Liam Salter (who scored six) and myself (scoring seven).
A seven from the Crowd, however, means they now hold the coveted lead by a solitary point.

AFL players to tread carefully in public amid Covid-19 outbreak

Share
But the prospect of it occurring during the finals could convince clubs to impose their own rules on places players can and can't visit.
'It will be interesting to see what happens in finals time if it (the outbreak) is still going - whether teams will lock down even if you don't need to, just to avoid that risk,' Gaff said.
'We haven't had an official chat from anyone as yet. But it should be pretty obvious to guys what they can and can't do.
'Just be smart about the busy scenarios over here because in the end you could miss one or two weeks at an important part of the year.

AFL locks in rest of round 19 fixture

The remaining pieces of the AFL's round 19 fixture puzzle are in place, with a double-header locked in for Gold Coast's Metricon Stadium.
The Essendon-GWS meeting has been confirmed for a 6.10pm bounce following the Sydney-Fremantle match, which starts at 12.30pm.
The heavyweight Geelong-Richmond clash will be played at the MCG at 3.20pm after the Cats' bid to have their home match switched to GMHBA Stadium was rejected by the AFL earlier this week.
Essendon are temporarily based at Noosa, having been relocated from Melbourne to Queensland last week.
They are likely to spend at least three weeks on the road, with upcoming opponents GWS and Sydney also in Queensland.

Sydney coach John Longmire has lauded his club’s come from behind win over GWS, following the pre-game COVID chaos.
Both teams lost players due to COVID protocols, with the Swans withdrawing Callum Mills, Harry Cunningham and Colin O’Riordan. The Giants meanwhile had to remove Toby Greene and Matt De Boer as they attended the rugby union, a Tier 2 COVID site in Victoria.
The Swans came back from a 35-point deficit to run down the Giants, with Longmire visibly emotional in the rooms.
The Sydney coach explained just how chaotic the pre-game situation was.

Isolating Giants, Swans out of AFL clash

The AFL may need to pause the season after eight Sydney and GWS players were forced into isolation, premiership-winning coach Adam Simpson says.
Star forward Toby Greene is among eight players from the Giants and the Swans now isolating in Queensland after attending a COVID-19 exposure site.
The eight players were made unavailable for Sunday night's game between GWS and Sydney in Queensland.

The AFL says 15 players and staff members from the two Sydney-based clubs attended the Wallabies' Test match against France in Melbourne on Tuesday night.

Franklin lifts Swans to big AFL comeback

Lance Franklin has helped lift the Swans to a stunning come-from-behind 26-point AFL win over GWS in a fixture where eight players were made unavailable late due to coronavirus protocols.
Sydney trailed by 35 early in the second quarter but came to life leading into halftime in the derby at Gold Coast's Metricon Stadium on Sunday night.
After a quiet first half, Franklin finished with four goals, which included his 400th for the Swans, in the 15.8 (98) to 11.6 (72) victory.

COVID dramas be damned, the football persevered through. Here’s some talking points from a consequential round of footy.
The Demons do still have a few very Melbourne-esque tendencies
It is a ridiculously Melbourne trend to be more than happy to play – and generally win against – teams in the eight but struggle badly when encountering teams who sit outside finals contention.
That is a trend the competition has witnessed in games the Dees have played against Adelaide, the Giants and Collingwood, but it came to the fore yet again in Saturday’s clash against the Hawks.
