As cases spread in India, the sub-lineage of B.1.617, B.1.617.2, is beginning to eclipse other variants including the Kent variant, B.1.1.7 that originated in the UK. Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka has seen cases of B.1.617.2 spread wide. Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Puducherry and Bihar have also shown more cases of the new sub-lineage, B.1.617.2.

The Lancet India Task Force on COVID-19 has suggested certain measures in order to fight coronavirus in the country. It has suggested a 'containment measures checklist' for the central government. It said that these measures must be implemented beyond the "current binary discussion on a lockdown". Among a host of suggestions, the panel said that lockdown is not an option.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Monday that countries must share vaccine-based technologies with each other. The FM said that there is no space for vaccine nationalism. She also said that the Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) agreement must be looked at amid the ravaging coronavirus pandemic.

India records 3.8 lakh new Covid-19 cases, 3,498 deaths

India reports 3,86,452 new COVID-19 cases, 3,498 deaths and 2,97,540 discharges in the last 24 hours, shows the Union health ministry data.
Total cases: 1,87,62,976
Total recoveries: 1,53,84,418
Death toll: 2,08,330
Active cases: 31,70,228
Total vaccinations: 15,22,45,179
The total number of recoveries also saw the biggest single-day rise of nearly 3 lakh on Thursday. India's recovery rate now stands at 82 per cent and the case positivity has been at 20.1 per cent.
As per the official data, nearly 35 per cent of India's total Covid-19 cases have been added in the month of April only.

The US government has told its citizens in India to leave the country as soon as possible because of the current coronavirus situation. The Department of State issued a Level 4 advisory -- the highest issued by them -- asking citizens "not to travel to India or to leave as soon as it is safe to do so".
