Magnitude-6.6 earthquake strikes off coast of Japan near Fukushima, no tsunami threat


TOKYO (REUTERS) - An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.6 jolted north-east Japan on Saturday (May 1), shaking buildings in the capital of Tokyo and raising the possibility of landsides, although no tsunami alert was issued. 
The earthquake struck off the coast of north-eastern Miyagi prefecture at a depth of 60km, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
It warned about possible landslides. 
There were no immediate reports of injuries. 
Buildings shook in Tokyo, the capital, some 400km away and public broadcaster NHK showed footage of a building shaking strongly in the north-eastern city of Sendai. 
At the devastated Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, which was wrecked by a massive earthquake in north-east Japan a decade ago, operator Tokyo Electric Power said there were no issues. ....

On Feb. 14, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake occurred off the coast of Japan’s Fukushima Prefecture. The fact that the Fukushima Dai-ichi and Fukushima Dai-ni nuclear power plants have been decommissioned, and the Onagawa, Tokai Dai-ni, Higashidori and Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plants are not operational might have prevented a nuclear accident.
Following the March 11, 2011, Tohoku earthquake, tsunami and resulting Fukushima nuclear disaster, Japan’s nuclear reactors were shut down in stages for safety checks. In June 2012, Japan for a while ran on zero nuclear power, which it did again for 11 months from September 2013. ....
