Tuesday marked the start of the Atlantic hurricane season. On the heels of an active season last year and forecasters’ prediction for another above-average season during the months ahead, this week’s WilmingtonBiz Talk was a talk with the area’s top emergency officials on preparations.

The panel was Tommy Batson, Pender County’s emergency management director; Edward Conrow, Brunswick County’s emergency services director; and Steven Still, New Hanover County’s emergency management director.

They discussed lessons learned since Hurricane Florence devastated the region in 2018, precautions against another major (or even) minor storm, and individuals and businesses can prepare.

Pender County issues burn ban in response to moderate drought

“Pender County has seen a rise in the number of outside fires that are requiring extensive manpower and equipment for containment,” Tommy Batson, Pender County emergency manager, said in a release. “The area has received little, to no rainfall in the past few weeks. Additionally, the forecasted highs this week in are expected in the 90’s with no rain in sight.”
Within the last 14 days, temperatures have risen and will continue creeping into the 90s this week; rain is not in the forecast. According to the National Weather Service, the coastal region is experiencing a rain deficit of more than 5 inches as well. Thus fire danger has increased.

Persisting drought conditions bring burn bans, water conservation alerts to the tri-county region

As the Cape Fear region continues to see moderate drought conditions, county officials have issued burn bans and water conservation alerts. In addition, the North Carolina Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits for 26 counties, including New Hanover, Pender, and Brunswick.
The N.C. Forest Service's burning ban goes into effect today, May 24, 2021. It will remain in effect until further notice.
“Our state is getting drier and hotter, and wildfires like those conditions,” says Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler.
“These conditions coming during spring wildfire season when wildfire activity and fire risks are already elevated, make this burn ban necessary to protect life and property in North Carolina.”

Pender County hires Tommy Batson as emergency management director

Pender County has named Tommy Batson as its emergency management director, according to a news release.
Batson, a Pender County native, started his public service career more than 24 years ago as a volunteer firefighter, officials said in the release. He started his role as emergency management director on March 28.
“As I take over as Director for Pender County Emergency Management, I plan to maintain and improve the capability of the department in successfully working relationships to prepare for, respond to, and mitigate from all-hazards related emergencies and disasters,” Batson said in the release.
He most recently has served as the county’s fire marshal and assistant emergency management director. Batson started his career with Pender County as a part-time telecommunicator in its 911 center.
