A free tax clinic run by Total Action for Progress is in jeopardy unless at least 12 volunteers are found by the end of September.

Feeding Southwest Virginia recently wrapped up its participation in the 15th annual statewide Legal Food Frenzy, where three Southwest Virginia law firms top won awards. Twenty-one law offices and organizations in a 26-county, nine-city service area joined in the competition, hosting creative activities designed to raise food and funds for local food banks. Together, they raised more than $41,000 to support Feeding Southwest Virginia. One local non-profit is adding a new warehouse that will help support its book program.

The Roanoke Valley SPCA has received a $10,000 grant from the Louise R. Lester Foundation for two programs. The grant will be used for the Sara Jane and Mickey Second Chance Fund and the Companion Animal Relief Fund. “This gift will help us to provide medical and behavioral care for both owned pets and shelter pets,” said Denise Hayes, chief executive officer of the Roanoke Valley SPCA. “We are so grateful for the continued support of the Louise R.
