An unusual — but busy — season concludes for Anthony Lakes Mountain Resort

NORTH POWDER — With skiers and snowboarders carving turns in fresh powder, feathery white clouds glittering in their wake, it was almost possible to forget there’s a pandemic going on.
But though symbols of the viral scourge were evident this season at Anthony Lakes Mountain Resort, the ski area bucked trends that affected other types of businesses by welcoming more visitors than the previous year, rather than fewer, said Anthony Lakes Marketing Director Chelsea Judy.
She didn’t have specific numbers.
“We went into it without any expectations, but I would say it was definitely a successful season,” Judy said on Wednesday, March 31. “People were grateful to be able to ski through a pandemic.”

Downtown projects move forward in Winston-Salem as developers look past the COVID-19 pandemic

March 20 was a day that Simon Burgess will remember: It was the first night since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic here that all the rooms in the Hotel Indigo downtown were booked.
“The restaurant has been doing really well,” he added. “It is still tough, but we can see the light at the end of the tunnel.”
Burgess is managing director of Mayfair Street Partners, which renovated the old Pepper Building as the Hotel Indigo in 2018 and had big hotel plans for nearby Merschel Park. The restaurant in the hotel is the Sir Winston.
Now, Burgess is feeling optimistic about development in downtown Winston-Salem, although he’ll be building apartments instead of hotel rooms to overlook Merschel Park at the south end of Trade Street downtown.

CAPECO makes a new 'Promise' in Pendleton

PENDLETON — The soft opening for the motel formerly known as The Whiskey Inn began on a sidewalk on Southeast Second Street.
About a half-dozen of Pendleton’s unhoused residents gathered Thursday, April 1, across the street in front of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, where Paula Hall, the chief executive officer of the Community Action Program of East Central Oregon, explained why the new homeless shelter and transitional housing project had been renamed the Promise Inn.
“We are making a promise to the homeless population and a promise to the community that we are going to keep this as an asset,” she said.

‘Tis the season to go camping.
With warm weather nearly upon Lake Cumberland once again, it’s time for the area’s numerous lakeside campgrounds to re-open to the public, allowing the opportunity to get away from it all for a while and enjoy the natural beauty of Pulaski County and he surrounding environs.
As such, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Nashville District) announced Wednesday the opening dates for campgrounds on their property.

Our view: Idea to convert motel a good one

The local area received some good news last week with the announcement that the Community Action Program of East Central Oregon will receive a large grant to help transform a former local hotel into a facility to help provide housing for the homeless and the housing insecure.
A $1.3 million grant of state funding administered by the Oregon Community Foundation will drive a plan to refurbish The Whiskey Inn on Dorion Avenue. The facility is a first-of-its-kind in the eastern portion of the state and it will hopefully go a long way toward helping those in the community most in need.
