While the threat of rain put a damper on the plan to hold Cobre High School’s graduation on the new artificial turf football field, the Class of 2021 was able to move indoors to mark the end of their four years at Cobre with a typical graduation ceremony. The last-minute change, of course, capped off a senior year that was anything but typical.
“As principal of Cobre High School, it is so great to see everyone come and support the graduating class of 2021,” Principal Sandra Montoya told the crowd. “It sure has been a different year, but we are getting close to getting back to normal, so we are happy for that.” ....

Newly hired Bayard police officers Joe Carlos and Aaron Ordoñez were sworn in during Monday afternoon’s meeting of the Bayard City Council.
Effective July 3, Bayard will give all 24 of its city employees a $2 hourly raise.
“We decided we could afford a raise for all employees of $2 an hour,” said Bayard Councilor Charles Kelly, who proposed the move at Monday’s regular meeting of the Bayard City Council. Kelly, Mayor Chon Fierro and City Clerk-Treasurer Kristina Ortiz came up with the idea during a recent discussion, which was in part a response to concerns about employee retention raised by Police Chief Lee Alirez. ....

Cobre proposal would begin class mid-July

By The Daily Press Staff
The COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact Grant County and its schools but fortunately, a positive case in the Cobre School District didn’t force the closure of a building, school board members learned at their regular meeting held virtually Monday evening.
“We did have one positive student case at one of our schools last week, which resulted in 22 students having to quarantine,” said Joyce Barela, school improvement coordinator for the district. “So those students, this week and next week, they will be learning remotely.”
According to Barela, the New Mexico Public Education Department is preparing to offer voluntary student school-based surveillance testing for COVID-19, which will be made available to parents on an opt-in basis. Many of the details of the effort are still being worked out at the state level, however. ....

The Cobre Schools Board of Education heard discussion on reopening in a hybrid model and allowing four-students-to-one-coach athletic pods and had a lengthy look at public input during their meeting Tuesday evening, which was held virtually.
Not only was there discussion, but more than one voice was raised during that discussion, to which board member Gabe Holguin toward the end of the meeting said, “I’d like to remind the board we’re all on the same team and we should maintain some professionalism and respect for each other’s opinions when we’re speaking. Body language speaks volumes, and it appears to me we’re not doing that and I’ll leave it at that.” ....
