LONDON: The Pentagon will review its overseas clandestine social media operations after Twitter and Meta removed pro-US accounts from their platforms last month. The in-depth audit was ordered on Monday by Colin Kahl, undersecretary for policy at the Department of Defense, to review the activities of military branches engaging in online psychological operations, or “psyops.”
Quoting unnamed White House and Defense officials, the Washington Post reported on Monday that the Pentagon has been operating fake social media accounts to promote pro-US narratives and anti-Russia propaganda for at least a decade.
The review was prompted after research revealed that Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and other social media platforms blocked campaigns aimed at influencing opinion in Central Asia and the Middle East.
