The Supreme Court on Tuesday quashed the criminal defamation complaint filed against Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav after he withdrew certain remarks that allegedly defamed Gujaratis.
The Supreme Court of India has asked the government to respond to a petition seeking the transfer of a public interest litigation (PIL) on surveillance systems from the Delhi High Court to the apex court. The PIL claims that citizens' right to privacy is being threatened by surveillance programs such as the Centralised Monitoring System (CMS), Network Traffic Analysis (NETRA), and National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID). The PIL asks for the cessation of these surveillance projects and the establishment of an independent oversight body to review interception and monitoring orders.
The Supreme Court noted that the accused, including Greeshma, her mother and uncle, had earlier withdrawn the plea from the Kerala High Court, which had left the question open for the trial court to decide on.
The Supreme Court held that its power to transfer criminal cases under Section 406, CrPC remains intact in relation to cheque dishonour cases under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act.

The Supreme Court on Thursday allowed the transfer of a matrimonial dispute from Pune to Patiala in a plea filed by the wife, while taking into account her convenience.
