So what are international university networks good for?

So what are international university networks good for?
In his 20 February piece, “Can university consortia and networks adapt to new normal?”, Gerardo Blanco argues that COVID-19 has so disrupted the functioning of international networks that they face serious questions about their sustainability. As executive director of one of the selective networks that he mentions explicitly, the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN), I beg to differ.
Dr Blanco’s thesis is that, in a post-COVID world, a global network like WUN is endangered because its principal function – to burnish the reputations of the highly selective research universities that constitute the membership – is no longer justifiable in a world of greater austerity. Were he right about the major function of the network I would wholeheartedly agree, but I think he has missed the point. ....

International students, researchers receive vaccine
The PIE News.
The country’s vaccination programme has been widely lauded for its success and while it has not completely halted fatalities, statistics suggest that only one in 1,500 fully vaccinated Israelis has tested positive for COVID-19.
Chair of the planning and budgeting committee of the Council for Higher Education, Yaffa Zilbershats, said by including international students and researchers in the vaccine roll-out, the country is “committed to enriching our higher education system through internationalisation and the integration of international students and researchers”. ....

Opposition to take action over campus language issue

Opposition to take action over campus language issue
IOL  13 March 2021
South Africa’s University of Stellenbosch has encouraged students to follow the official complaints procedure after allegations in the media that some of them were allegedly denied the right to communicate with each other in Afrikaans – even in the privacy of their own residences, reports
IOL.
Stellenbosch University spokesperson Martin Viljoen said in a statement: “It is not university policy that only English be used in residences, that videos that also contain Afrikaans may not be shown or that students are barred from speaking Afrikaans.”
According to the Democratic Alliance’s Leon Schreiber, students who had complained said the alleged ban only applies to Afrikaans and not to other indigenous languages, and “Afrikaans students are therefore forced to speak only English with their fellow students or visitors, even in situations where everyone is Afrikaans-speaking”. S ....

Universities seek more funding as domestic enrolments rise

Universities seek more funding as domestic enrolments rise
Universities in New Zealand will be asking the government for more cash after a surge in domestic enrolments as Canterbury, Victoria and Otago are all starting the year with between 1,300 and 1,500 more full-time domestic students than last year, increases of 9%-13%, while Lincoln has 230 more, an increase of 35%, writes John Gerritsen for
Radio New Zealand.
Other universities did not provide figures, but RNZ understands Auckland University of Technology has about 1,000 more full-time equivalent domestic enrolments than at the same time in 2020.
Victoria University of Wellington Vice-Chancellor Grant Guilford said the enrolments were likely to exceed the number the Tertiary Education Commission had agreed to subsidise at his institution this year and it would have to ask for more. “We believe that the government will honour the enrolments that we have, even though they are well above the maximum that th ....
