LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) -- La Crosse kicked off its annual transit equity days Monday.
La Crosse, Wisconsin, celebrates its annual Transit Equity Days, emphasizing public transit as a civil right and a means to reduce carbon footprint. La Crosse Area Transit Advocates organizes various events throughout the week to raise awareness about the city's bus systems and their benefits, including cleaner air and decreased greenhouse gas emissions. As part of the celebration, free rides are offered for an entire week. This initiative aligns with the nationwide celebration of Transit Equity Day, coinciding with Rosa Parks' birthday.
February 4 is Rosa Parks’ birthday. It is also Transit Equity Day. These days are tied together because Rosa Parks is an iconic figure among many of the civil rights era who chose the tactic of refusing to give up her seat on the bus. And transit advocates, like myself, want to make the connection to this act of resistance to highlight the rights of all people to high-quality public transportation powered by clean and renewable energy and organized labor.
All seven lines serviced by Metrolink will be fully closed in late December to give the system a historic facelift.
It's the eighth year in a row that MCTS will keep a seat open, with a rose laid out, to honor the legacy of Rosa Parks
