explored. i'm confident in the leadership of mayor eric adams who, himself, was a transit officer during the '80s and '90s, when crime was really out of control in the city of new york. we have come a long way since then. still have a ways to go. we have a seen a retrenchment over the last few years given the rise of the pandemic and shootings and homicides and other instances of crime and violence on the uptick. months ago, mayor adams indicated he was going to lean into this issue of making the subways safer. i don't think we can be in any better hands and we should explore the partnerships at the federal level and the state level to do that. >> thank you very much for your time. >> thank you. >> let's bring in cnn law enforcement analyst. also cnn national security
the jury is kept in the dark about some of these plans, particularly sentencing. here the prosecution is going for the maximum allowed. these are the proper charges. just because they are probably put forth doesn't mean there's a proper basis conviction. officers were convicted in cases recently. there was a transit officer in california where the jury rejected the most serious charges but did find him guilty on the lesser offense and gave him two years. but that case showed how the jurors struggled with this. and all of these cases, the officers clearly -- that raises the public debate to either of these laws should be narrowed and clarified. that you need something far
>> it's really unbelievable. it's not just been expensive, because they had to turn these courthouses into fortresses, but i am sure people in minnesota are just done with all of this constant worry about whether there will be riots, what will the verdict be. you know, this is a population that's been through a lot, putting aside the fact that they went through these traumatic cases where people died, and it raised real issues for many about racial justice, police tactics. so the people of minnesota obviously could use a break. they have been ground zero now for a long time in these cases. >> jacqui: jonathan, do any other cases come to mind that is similar to the trial we are watching? were the outcomes in those cases that might inform what we are about to see? speak of the one that's most interesting is there was a transit officer in california

you know a few years ago in oakland there was a bart officer a transit officer that pulled his firearm as opposed to his taser, shot and killed an individual. after that happened, many departments changed their training. that includes how you carry the taser. most departments have you carry it on the weak side so that you can't mistake it for your firearm. tasers also come in bright colors like yellow or a bright green, to further distinguish between the two. but let me just say something else, because the whole thing from the beginning of the stop was really poorly done. the tactics led to this, in my opinion. when you look at the officer making the stop. they get mr. wright out of the car, there is a reason why police officer take people once they're out of the car to the rear of the car. that lessens the likelihood of them trying to jump in the car and take off. he's right there at the driver's door, car running.
