Abc s david kerley has the details. reporter: out on the southern indian ocean these ships are still searching for malaysia 370, one of aviation s greatest mysteries. after that frustratingly long search for the wreck of the airasia jet. a new plan aims to keep this from ever happening again to a jet flying over water. the national transportation safety board wants jet line toers transmit their location more often or a flight data location more often so rescue crews have a smaller area to search or the jets should be equipped with an ejectable recorder when something goes wrong. the board is asking low frequency transmitters be attached to the plane which will make it easier to hear, making the fuselage easier to find. this as we are learning happened in the airasia flight 8501 and the chaos in the cockpit. one unnamed source quoted in the french press said there were so many alarms captured by the voice recorder that the jet was, in essence, screaming at the pilots. ....

Panel now to answer your questions. we have cnn aviation analyst david soucie and ken christensen, an aviation consultant and he worked with air force search and rescue. so, colonel, our first tweet to you, the tweet is is it about time too r to attach emergency locator beacons on airplanes? there are emergency locator transmitters on airplanes currently. both general aviation and emergency locate transmitters. they are on all commercial and military aircraft. so i want let me sort of follow up on this because e.l.t.s, right, isn t that what they are called? correct. so they have these e.l.t.s and i think there s more than one on a plane, they are not as reliable as say, you know a black box is very reliable. ....

Thoroughly and get all of the salt water out to where you have clean, pristine water to move everything out of there if it indeed was breached which most of the time it is. and of course, there s a little bit of a time limit on how quickly they ll find that because of the pings that those transmitters put out on the black boxes. there was a great race against time to try to locate the black box pingers before the batteries ran out and, indeed, they were never located before the time, 30-day limit ran out. in this case, you know, we ve got a much better situation, shallower water, much smaller search area. and so i don t think that s going to be a problem in this case. i think, you know people with memories are going to be fresh as david can attest that you know people were really thinking if only if only these batteries had been mandated to be longer. you know it would have been so tense. i don t think we re going to be worrying about it here. it s tough to talk about the ....

Garret, she won the pulitzer prize in 1986 for her journalism chronicling an outbreak in congo. thanks for being here. thank you. i ve been watching this happen and wondering why we haven t heard more about it. help me to understand how we can sound the alarm without hitting a panic button. what should we be concerned about and how, in what ways? i think the last thing we need to be concerned about is, well ebola come to america? let s take that off the table and get real. getting real is we have an unprecedented situation that is very hard to forecast. we ve never had a situation where ebola is coming out of the rain forest and the rain forest happens to cut across all three of the countries. so, we don t actually know how many of these cases are reintroductions from the wild bats and monkeys that usually are the transmitters of this really rare virus in humans. the third thing is it s across ....

They are good rational questions about the locater transmitters about what kind of box they re stored in. they re very realistic, technical questions. i was stunned to learn the family members had not been given up to this point. those are answers that could easily be given to family members. yes, so that is the point. we asked only technical questions. it is not about mh-370. but it is about the plane. the triple 7. about the system, how it works. but they still refused to give us the answer. i don t know what kind of good communications that they are providing to the family members. are you prepared at this point it has been seven weeks. are you prepared for the possibility they may never find this plane. but are you convinced they will find this. just a question of how long? well, with the high tech technology, i think i am very confident that the plane will be found. but it will take a long time, but it will finally be found. ....
