Automated transponder should be one of the take aways here. we have automatic data surveillance in the pacific ocean right now, it takes forever to make institutional change because of the safety requirements and the resistance of basically airlines to want to add any type of costs. so we have, in the pacific ocean we have this capability, but in the place where the plane supposedly went down and the place where it apparently made that turn, we have to rely on nonradar oceanic position reports. that plane was reporting every 15 minutes to a third party who was reporting to the ground. it s kind of unconscionable, that s why people are amazed that in this day and age we don t have that capability. you re saying the capability exists but the plane was not equipped with it? malaysia air made a decision, and it s kind of incredible and in hindsight this will be a game ....

Around the sleep pattern. aircraft will be based in perth and used to fly out to the area and procedures that are involved. rick pointed out earlier on it wasn t too far away from the area we ve been looking. hopefully it won t take too much time to corroborate. it s 120 kilometers south. okay. would that be consistent of currents moving? i couldn t say whether it s consistent with currents but in terms of flying time. let s bring rick in. just a quick calculation shows this is roughly around 60 miles away from the original image that came out last week. seven days old from the last image. this new image that has come out, 60, 65 miles away from that original image. still in no man s land. i m fascinated about the transponder. we had the former ntsb official on earlier and the range where you need to get up close if ....

They certainly want everybody to have knowledge of that so they could fire trucks out there and everything else. or am i crazy? you are not crazy. and every credible pilot i talk to about this theory, they just kind of laughed it of o. the first thing they are taught, any kind of smell of smoke, put on oxygen mask, full oxygen. still smoke? you put on the goggles. then you ask for clearance for the nearest runway. you just can t make a left and then start trying to find a runway. there are other aircraft up there. and then the theory continues. they have shut down all the power and that s where the transponder and the acar system all shut off. if they would have done that they would have been in pitch black. what pilot is going to turn off all his power to be in pitch black? and then the plane flies on for another seven hours. why? because everybody was dead and then okay. all right. so we all right. again, now, i think this story is pretty much over for now. now, certainly the ....

Hold. so knowing that, we would quickly look up here to the fire panel and discharge the fire bottles back there. essentially the fire extinguishers. you have fire retardant dumping down there and you are hoping this is enough to extinguish the blaze. in the meantime mitchell would already be starting to turn us back either to where we came from or to the nearest airport. we want to get down low and we definitely want to start talking on the radios to get us into an emergency landing because fire is about the worst scenario. however, it s possible that the co-pilot could now be down below in the electrics bay trying to unplug whatever it is that is causing this fire. that s why the transponder went out at one point and that s why the acar system goes out at one point. they work and try to bring this plane under control, and under ....

It have to have been done after the sign-off, but we also have to say it is selective fire, it is only shutting off the acars, the transponder, but not the auto pilot. mike, you agree with that? well, sean, i think it is important to know the limitations of what is going on in the cockpit of a jet, so i m going to have to punt this one over. i think absolutely yes, you have the transponder in the acars units going into it. you have all sorts of feeds, what are the engines doing, the cabin pressure? you have all of these speeds going into the cockpit and so there is a high chance that a cockpit fire could destroy some of the feeds and render them ....
