Flew out toward penang on the western coast of malaysia, out of the straits of malacca and the pings they received from the engine data aligned almost perfectly with an airway heading northwest toward sri lanka. i want to talk about that theory. but first, karen, i wanted to ask you if there s been a lot of confusion about what exactly the transponder is. it s a frequency that s in there in the cockpit you can set. have you ever had occasion as a pilot to turn the transponder off? is there some aspect of that that doesn t seem as incriminating or mysterious or bizarre as it appears to lay folks like me? procedures are to turn on the transponder right before we take off and then we turn it off after we land. i don t see any reason to turn it off en route at all. it sends out a signal so the air traffic control can see where you are. procedures are to turn on the have you ever had an occasion where you lost a transponder for a reason where there was some ....

It can also be set by a pilot who knows that s the way to the fastest airport. he s just had a major mechanical breakdown and he needs to get his plane on the ground. what happens after that? we have no idea, but there are a lot of theories out here. you know, what we re hearing about the investigators and all of this about the pilots, it all presupposes the pilots had a reason to take this plane off course, that somehow, they were involved. problem is, john, we don t have a shred of evidence yet from them as to a motive with either one of these pilots. back to you. no, we don t. we don t know whether those computers were programmed before the plane took off or in the air. we don t know if it happened during that period of the last voice contact, which was also when the acars system was disabled, which was also soon before the transponder, the radar contact was shut down. so jim, as you say, there are so many questions that need to be answered here, but this is just the latest piece ....

The simplest explanation right now might be pilot sabotage, and perhaps just one of the pilots, if in fact that happens wouldn t the simplest just be there s a fire onboard? the problem is that s very much a devil s advocate position. to be perfectly clear, we re missing a lot of data points here. so you can construct a case for lots of different points. however, the transponder being seemingly turned off, true, that we don t know that a person did that. just all of these appearances, that whoever was in control, and rather clearly somebody seemed to be in some control of this plane, was not trying to make themselves seen. was not sending out distress signals. fred earlier talked about air france 447. in that case, we had a pilot sending out distress signals in the middle of all these terrible things that were happening. so it s very much the devil s advocate argument at this point. okay. i tell you, it s frustrating sitting here trying to navigate ....

It was so efficient in the way that the plane disappeared. and one point that i think has not had a lot of emphasis which is important, is this westward turn by the jet was made as it was transitioning between two different air traffic controls, and this is kind of a no man s land where any kind of flight irregularity would not be so easily picked up. that does not seem by coincidence, either. we re going to leave it there. thank you very much for the excellent reporting. can i bring something else out that came out today, later on this afternoon? maybe earlier in the day, i guess. the time military is now, today, 11 days out, has confirmed two pings they got. they got one at 1:28, which is after the transponder was turned off and one at 6:15, which is five hours later. anyone want to speculate why the thai military would wait 11 days to say they confirmed this actual important turn on the airplane and why we wasted 11 ....

To do with the aircraft. so obviously as anything is possible, i don t know if this was obviously catastrophic failure of the aircraft, itself, or perhaps an explosion. and, you know, the argument about this altitude change, without the transponder, you can see the airplane, but you can t tell what the altitude is. so unless if they have some other military radar, highly sophisticated one that could tell the altitude from just the primary signature of the aircraft, i don t know how they re getting these altitude reportings. right. there s been some notes of caution that those altitude reporting might be out of lack. latane, you mentioned a theory that was shooting around today. this shadow theory. talk about that. explain, again, that plausibility, right after we ....
