The City of Oak Ridge is working to convert 4.6 miles of abandoned CSX railroad tracks into a greenway for pedestrians and bicyclists.

The sidewalks that stretch around the outskirts of Bardstown that have proven to be so popular to local residents could be extended if the city gets approved for a grant from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet for federal money through a Transportation Alternative Program. City engineer Jessica Filiatreau told the Bardstown City Council Tuesday night the 80/20 matching grant would extend the sidewalk on the south side of Templin Avenue that currently ends at the Wellington subdivision to the new Bardstown Primary School.

A Transportation Alternative Program grant could restore a 1926 lounge car for collaborative use between The Kentucky Railway Museum and Log Still Distillery. KRM Executive Director Greg Mathews presented an application for an 80/20 grant that would award them $365,000 for the restoration of the car called The Kentucky Club. “This is a unique opportunity,” Mathews said. “It’ll take a while because the club needs work, (and) it’ll probably take anywhere from eight to 16 months for all the work to be done.”
