Halting site conditions
4. Traveller rights groups have welcomed a new long-term report which has recommended improvements to living conditions at a Cork halting site which activists say has the potential to change conditions at sites across the country.
The Traveller Visibility Group (TVG) and the Cork Traveller Women’s Network (CTWN) said the findings of a report show that the poor conditions at the site are negatively impacting the rights of the children living there.
This is the Ombudsman’s first report which examined the living conditions of Traveller children at one particular halting site in Cork. The report looked at the conditions for a period of three years, which makes it one of the largest complaints that the OCO has investigated.

Many people have seen a television programme about people from a Gypsy, Roma or Traveller background.
But the likelihood is that it was a documentary, rather than a drama or comedy.
On 8 April, actor s union Equity, which represents nearly 50,000 performers across the UK, is aiming to address a lack of on-screen and behind-the-camera representation by launching its Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (GRT) network.
In a statement on the launch of the network, Equity said while there were some good practices emerging, not enough was being done to promote GRT communities in drama.

The finding that benefits have not materialised came this week from the Director of Advocacy of the Traveller Visibility Group in Cork, Breda O’Donoghue.
TRAVELLERS are still waiting to see the benefits in their lives of their recognition as an ethnic group granted to them in 2017.
This is very disappointing to know and it is a problem that needs to be addressed.
