In 2021, the City of Gainesville planted a variety of trees to create an area for people to come and pick fruit–without strings attached.
Formerly called The Mature Tree Program, the Neighborhood Canopy Program is getting positive feedback from both residents and visitors.
Councilwoman Marina Alderete Gavito (D7) has asked the city to consider a program to help replace infected oaks with other native trees after they have been removed. It would apply to trees on both public and private land.
