Community Stepping Up After Losing Grocery Store

EDWARDS COUNTY, IL - Albion, Illinois is the county seat in Edwards County. It's the place to take care of local business, grab a bite to eat, and up until recently was the place to get your groceries for your home. Recently, that has changed with the closing of the county's only grocery store, Borowiak's IGA. Late in 2022, Trevor Borowiak made the announcement that the Borowiak Family was selling the building that housed the IGA and that the store would be closing at the end of January. The store liquidated their inventory and on January 27, Borowiak's IGA closed their doors for the final time. With the closure, that turned Edwards County into a food desert, or a region when they had limited access to healthful and or affordable food. The nearest grocery store to Edwards County is about 15 miles away to the east in Mount Carmel. While there is now not a grocery store in Albion, a few places around Edwards County are working on trying to help with the problem. Baile ....

Borowiak's Closes After 43 Years in Albion

Community Members in Albion said their goodbyes to their local grocery store late last week. Borowiak's IGA in Downtown Albion closed their doors for the final time Last Friday. Borowiak's opened their Albion Location in 1979 and for 43 years was a place that community members shopped for their groceries, picked up cakes to celebrate birthdays, and their fried chicken dinners for family gatherings. According to a note from December of 2022 from Trevor Borowiak, the building was sold last year and remodeling will be taking place in the near future. Borowiak in the note didn't leak any details on what was going in place, but said they have loved their time at the location and will miss all the relationships built over the years. ....

The Illinois Critical Access Hospital Network recently recognized Fairfield Memorial Hospital for its ongoing commitment to exceptional quality of care, during a ceremony held November 10th during ICAHN's Annual Conference at the I-Hotel and Conference Center in Champaign, Illinois. As part of the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy Medicare Beneficiary Quality Improvement Program, Fairfield Memorial Hospital and other critical access hospitals were asked to voluntarily participate in four defined domains of quality outcomes. These four domains include: Patient Safety/Inpatient; Patient Engagement; Care Transitions; and Outpatient Measures. Fairfield Memorial Hospital was honored for being a top performer in all four domains. Fairfield Memorial Hospital was recognized for being in the top 10% of all critical access hospitals in the country for outpatient quality measures.
