On Thursday, February 23rd, at 6:00 p.m. central time, the LaSalle Public Library will virtually host Tricia Menke, Curator of Education at the National Museum of the American Sailor, for a presentation on the Golden Thirteen.<br/><br/>Sixteen African American sailors, in 1944, arrived at Great Lakes for a groundbreaking officers’ training course. Thirteen of those men would become the first African American commissioned officers’ in Navy history. In this presentation, Tricia explores the experiences of the Golden Thirteen at Great Lakes, their time in the fleet, and the lasting legacy of these pioneers. <br/><br/>This program is free, open to the public, and will be presented via Zoom. Sailors get them for different reasons, different places on their bodies, and in different styles. In this virtual presentation, Ms. Menke will discuss the ways in which tattoos and Navy culture intertwine, how they are part of Navy traditions, and show the many styles of Navy tattoos.<br/><br/>This program is free, open to the public, and will be presented via Zoom. The First Division Museum at Cantigny Park in Wheaton hosts two free online history lectures in December. The first is on African-American soldiers who received the Medal of Honor, and is set for Dec. 2. The next one is titled "A Day That Will Live in Infamy: The Attack on Pearl Harbor," and is set for Thursday, Dec. 9.
