Several years ago I read a book titled âThe Whistling Season.â At first I had trouble getting into it, but as it progressed I really got into the language of the time and place, which was homesteading in Montana in the 1920s. References to word origin from the Latin really grabbed me and I was surprised to find how much I remembered from Latin classes so long ago. As a writer by profession, I have been better served by Latin than I could have imagined when I was struggling through it in high school and later in college. As I read the book I started to write down related words that intrigued me, hoping to discover a column idea at the root of this exercise. The words âfateâ and âdestinyâ stood out, perhaps because I have an interest in where people live and choices we make. Are we fated or destined to be where we are? ....
Every time I see the âIâve got junkâ commercial on television I get annoyed. I canât imagine anyone pointing at a room and saying, âtake it all.â Itâs the sorting out and deciding what you can get rid of thatâs a problem. But, as we ease into summer itâs a good time to declutter and lighten up. A couple of years ago I wrote a book called, âUpscale Downsizing.â It was about how to selectively choose what you love and make it work in a smaller home. Itâs hard to get rid of something you once coveted. I had an uncle with the unfortunate nickname of âBunny.â You can imagine the gifts heâd gotten over the years and ultimately left to his relatives to deal with. ....
