Madagascar Key Message Update: Poor production continues to drive high prices across the south July 2021 Format Key Messages FEWS NET recently received information on humanitarian food assistance deliveries which have been ongoing since late July and which are planned through October. These data indicate that an estimated 20 to 70 percent of the population in ten districts across the south are either currently or are expected to receive humanitarian food assistance through October. As such, there is the potential for food security outcomes to improve during the July to September mapping period relative to current projections. Further analysis of these data, including the degree to which populations of greatest concern were reached, will be provided in the August FSOU.
29 July 2021 The Global Education Summit in London and why investing in Girls’ Education is the best investment we can make “Later this week, Madagascar will be one of many countries attending the Global Education Summit in London. The purpose of the Summit, which is being co-hosted by the UK and Kenya: to raise US$5 billion for the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), to help ensure quality education for boys and girls in 90 developing countries and territories, including here in Madagascar. I had the pleasure this month to visit schools in Taolagnaro, Tsihombe and Antananarivo, including in the company of the National Education Minister, Mme Marie Michelle Sahondrarimalala. The purpose was to hear and see a little about the needs and wishes of children and teachers.

Les essaims sont allés même envahir nos cases», ont-ils déploré. Madagascar - Grand Sud Humanitarian Key Messages Format HIGHLIGHTS People in the Grand Sud of Madagascar are facing the most acute drought the region has seen since 1981, leading to a severe humanitarian crisis. Some 1.13 million people—nearly two in every five people in the Grand Sud—are severely food insecure and the situation is expected to deteriorate further. Global acute malnutrition rates have risen sharply. The number of communes in nutrition emergency has increased from 38 in December 2020 to 97 in April 2021. KEY MESSAGES The Grand Sud of Madagascar has been buffeted by back to back droughts during the 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 rainy seasons, forcing people to resort to desperate survival measures, such as eating locusts, raw red cactus fruits or wild leaves. The agriculture sector has been severely impacted. Between November 2020 and January 2021, less than 50 per cent of the normal rainfall was received in the Grand Sud, leading to the most acute drought in the region since 1981. By January 2021, almost 69 per cent of the Grand Sud was impacted by extreme drought. The water table is critically low in many districts, reducing access to potable water.
Madagascar [Grand South]: Integrated Food Security Phase Classification Snapshot | April - December 2021 Format Overview A sustained deterioration in food insecurity is expected in the Grand South of Madagascar from April to December 2021. Over 1.1 million people are in high acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 3 or above) due to insufficient rainfall, rising food prices and sandstorms. The lean season is expected to begin earlier than usual for the current consumption year, as households will deplete their low food stocks due to minimal production. During the current analysis period (April-September 2021), which begins with a harvest period, 1.14 million people need urgent action (IPC Phase 3 or above).
