CHRISTOPHER STEVENS reviews the weekend's TV

Rating:
Here comes the alphabetti spaghetti again. There’s a BBA in E14 — send for the ladies of the RCM, PDQ.
Call The Midwife (BBC1) went all Line Of Duty, with a scattergun of initials, as Nurse Lucille Anderson (Leonie Elliott) broke off from training students from the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) and raced away by express bicycle to a Born Before Arrival (BBA) in Poplar (postcode E14).
With tensions mounting, there was a real danger Lucille might barge into the office of head nun Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) and address her as ‘Guv’. Mother of God!
Luckily, a BBA is just an impatient baby that doesn’t hang around waiting to be delivered by a woman in a plum uniform. It’s got nothing to do with an OCG (organised crime gang), which in the East End of the 1960s meant the Kray Twins and their associates.

What is PKU, or Phenylketonuria? Call the Midwife diagnosis explained

What is PKU, or Phenylketonuria? Call the Midwife diagnosis explained
In episode five, the midwives and Dr Turner come across a child with a rare genetic disorder.
Sunday, 16th May 2021 at 8:24 pm
Over the years, Call the Midwife has taught us many lessons about medicine and childbirth – but in season 10 episode five, we’re talking about a
literal lesson as Shelagh Turner (Laura Main) stands in front of her blackboard quizzing her pupil midwives about “post-natal testing for mother & baby”.

One of the things mentioned is a urine test for PKU, or phenylketonuria, which Shelagh describes as “exceptionally uncommon”. Sadly, it’s not uncommon enough and, later in the same episode, Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) comes across a child suffering from the condition.

Call the Midwife Fenella Woolgar on Louise Wrigley mental health plot

Sunday, 2nd May 2021 at 9:00 pm
Louise Wrigley (played by Jenny Walser) is a puzzling patient for Sister Hilda (Fenella Woolgar) and Dr Turner (Stephen McGann) when she turns up at the clinic in Call the Midwife season 10, episode four. First she insists she must be pregnant, though tests show she is not; then she complains of crippling stomach pains, blood in her urine, and blood in her vomit. It is only when Sister Hilda spots a bloody razor blade and examines the blood flecks in the vomit bowl that she realises the truth: Louise Wrigley is unwell – but she is creating her own physical symptoms because of a mental illness.

Our to the biggest Netflix TV shows not to miss this week

On Demand - Stowaway (Netflix, from Thu)
If the cast is anything to go by, this sci-fi movie should be a real winner - Anna Kendrick, Daniel Dae Kim, Toni Collette and Shamier Anderson all feature. Directed by Brazilian film-maker Joe Penna, who also co-wrote the script with Ryan Morrison, it focuses on the crew of a spaceship en route to Mars. However, someone has accidentally stowed away, causing severe damage to the craft's life support systems. As their resources begin to dwindle, those on board must find a way to deal with their new circumstances or face certain death. While the ship's commander and biologist favour a solution based on clinical logic, a medical researcher with a very different idea tries to stand up for what she believes in.

TV tonight: back to Nonnatus House in Call the Midwife

Last modified on Sun 18 Apr 2021 01.35 EDT
Call the Midwife
8pm, BBC One
We’re back at Nonnatus House for the 10th series of this sedate BBC drama staple, now reaching 1966. A momentous year for more than just English football, we open with Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) deciding whether a nearby private clinic might help keep Nonnatus House afloat, while the birth of a baby boy with no legs below the knees leads Dr Turner (Stephen McGann) to worry that this could be another Thalidomide case. And Sister Monica Joan (Judy Parfitt) continues to reckon with her crisis of faith.

Call the Midwife, episode 1 review: 10 series in, the ladies of Nonnatus House remain wonderful companions

It came as no surprise to hear Vanessa Redgrave’s voice-over mentioning “dawns” and “new days” as the 10th series of
Call the Midwife (BBC One) got under way. This was 1966, after all, but the nuns of Nonnatus House were neither swinging nor singing; privatisation was in the air.
Facing an uncertain future, ever-pragmatic Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) was considering controversial methods to prop up their work: a private Mayfair maternity hospital could enjoy the cachet of using nuns on the premises while Nonnatus reaped the financial benefits. Mother Mildred was reported as regarding this scheme as “Robin Hood with wimples” (even in absentia, Miriam Margolyes bags the best lines), but Dr Turner (Stephen McGann) was appalled, prompting “the first cross word I’ve had with [Julienne] in almost 20 years”.
