NEW PHILADELPHIA Bail has been set at $1 million for a man accused of shooting at multiple law enforcement officers Tuesday at his home near Bolivar.
If he were able to post bond, Donald E. Whiting, Jr., would be required to remain on electronically monitored house arrest under terms set Monday by Carroll County Municipal Judge Gary L. Willen.
The judge ordered Whiting to have no contact with the neighbor whose complaint about a concerning letter from the suspect preceded Tuesday s incident. He appointed the Tuscarawas County Public Defender s Office to represent Whiting.
Willen is handling the case because New Philadelphia Municipal Judge Nanette DeGarmo VonAllman has a conflict.
The shooting occurred in the 600 block of 11th Drive NW, according to police.
Butler s murder charge could bring a death sentence or a life sentence if he is convicted, according to VonAllman. Other possibilities are 25-years-to-life and 30-years-to-life. Aggravated robbery carries a prison term of three to 11 years and a possible fine up to $20,000.
Mark Perlaky of the Tuscarawas County Public Defender s Office is representing Butler.

All the charges carry specifications that a gun was used in the crimes. The charges came from an April 2020 incident in which Butler allegedly fired a gun into the air, then into a car where a young woman and three teenage girls were sitting. Gunshots hit the car and injured a 17-year-old girl. She was hit by
