Tourism taxing districts could be coming soon

Tourism taxing districts could be coming soon Twin bills with bipartisan support to jumpstart Arizona tourism appear dead in the Senate, but they may reappear this year or next as the concept has gained support nationally and here.    SB1101 and HB2161 give cities and towns the power to create tourism marketing authorities, which can levy assessments on hotel rooms.   Although the House version passed the chamber on a 38-20 vote and the Senate version was approved in committee 7-1, neither has advanced since those respective votes. The 2020 versions of the bills also got bipartisan su...

Mesa senator helps defeat abortion bill

Arizona won’t force women to give birth in cases where a fetus has a genetic abnormality, at least not now, after a state senate from Mesa broke ranks and joined Democrats to defeat the measure. Republicans called the measure already passed by the full Senate a lifeline for 600,000 low-income students who would become entitled to state funding for private school tuition. Minority Democrats argued it would siphon money from already-underfunded public...

As GOP makes it harder to vote, few Republicans dissent - New Delhi Times - India's Only International Newspaper

March 12, 2021 Share In Arizona, a Republican state senator worried aloud that his party’s proposed voter identification requirements might be too “cumbersome.” But he voted for the bill anyway. In Iowa, the state’s Republican elections chief put out a carefully worded statement that didn’t say whether he backs his own party’s legislation making it more difficult to vote early. And in Georgia, Republican Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan left the room as Senate Republicans approved a bill to block early voting for all but the GOP’s most reliable voting bloc. Duncan instead watched M...
