The U.S. Forest Service on Wednesday withdrew its approval of a right-of-way permit that would have allowed the construction of a railroad project through about 12 miles (19 kilometers) of roadless, protected forest in northeastern Utah.

If completed, the rail route would link with freight lines that run alongside the Colorado River and cross delicate ecosystems.

Members of the Mormon Environmental Stewardship Alliance in Utah are applauding the Environmental Protection Agency's final rule that sharply reduces emissions of methane and other air pollution from oil and natural-gas operations.
