The 11th session of the UN’s Open-ended Working Group on Ageing took place at the end of March against the backdrop of the continued COVID-19 pandemic and in the aftermath of some of the gravest violations of older people’s rights.
Less than one year earlier 146 states from around the world had committed to promoting and respecting the rights of older persons, responding to calls to ‘cull’ older people in the media and the serious violations of rights in care homes and discriminatory age-based restrictions on older people’s movement.
Eleven months on, only eight of those who made that commitment took part in the discussion on COVID-19 and its impact on older people at the meeting of the UN Open-ended Working Group on Ageing. ....

GENEVA As the Syrian war reaches its grim decade-long milestone, the UN envoy for the country told the Security Council on Monday that it will “go down as one of the darkest chapters in recent history” referring to the Syrian people as among “the greatest victims of this century”.
“I want to commemorate Syrian victims and remember Syrian suffering and resilience in the face of unimaginable violence and indignities that.[they] have faced over ten long years”, Special Envoy Geir Pedersen said, reciting a litany of “countless” violations of international law, including “the unspeakable horrors of chemical weapons”. ....

Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS) and Barrister Michael Polak of Church Court Chambers and Justice Abroad strongly condemn the continued detention of freelance journalist Kilwe Adan Farah by Puntland authorities since December 27, 2020 over politically motivated charges and calls for his unconditional release.
On the evening of 27 December 2020, officers from PISA (Puntland Intelligence and Security Agency) in Garowe, the capital of Puntland State, detained journalist Kilwe, who reports for Kilwe Media Inc , a Facebook news page he co-founded.
