Voting centers are starting to open across California as the 2022 primary election is just over a week away.

Naturally, it came as a surprise when the Los Angeles Times recently endorsed Republican Lanhee Chen for California State Controller, the office of the state's chief fiscal officer. Chen, a Bay Area policy wonk who worked on Mitt Romney and Marco Rubio's presidential campaigns, has promised to serve as an independent watchdog of Democrats in Sacramento. The Times' editorial board sees value in having someone outside the party structure overseeing the disbursement of state funds and auditing transactions.

Kiley is running in June's Primary Election against fellow Republican Scott Jones, the Sacramento County Sheriff, for the District 3 congressional seat. It's a new district created as a result of redistricting. Other candidates include Democrats Kermit Jones and David Peterson.

Election season officially begins in California on Monday, when voters can start dropping off their ballots for the June 7 primary.

The 2022 California June primary election is less than six weeks away.
