Art engages with the community — and connects! By Marilyn Delk - DCCA News Mississinawa Valley High School student artists have worked on preliminary plans for a mural representing Union City and the surrounding area. Provided photo Last year, Mississinawa Valley art teacher Ashley Austerman applied to the Ohio Arts Council for a grant enabling her to bring a professional artist to her classroom to establish an often-requested photography course; the project would also reach out to the community at large, providing various opportunities for engagement with the arts. Mrs. Austerman’s well-thought out plan was approved and received funding; other community entities including Darke County Endowment for the Arts, who granted the amount needed to purchase digital cameras, contributed to the project which was enthusiastically embraced by MV students. Soon, the entire community will be treated to the culmination of students’ efforts: a beautiful mural representing Union City and the surrounding area.

Hazardous conditions blamed for rollover crash Jim Comer | Darke County Media UNION CITY — Hazardous road conditions may be to blame for a Sunday evening rollover crash that has left a driver injured near Union City, Ohio. At approximately 5:54 p.m., emergency personnel from Union City Fire and Rescue responded along with Darke County deputies to the 1000 block of Beamsville Union City Road in reference to a single-vehicle rollover crash with injury. According to the Darke County Sheriff’s Office, a preliminary investigation into the incident revealed a green 2000 Toyota Tacoma, driven by Joshua Vigil, 19, of Union City, was traveling eastbound on Beamsville Union City Road. Vigil failed to maintain control of his vehicle on ice-covered roadways, resulting in the Toyota traveling off the right side of the roadway and rolling at least once before coming to rest in a field.
Union City Fire Department remembered with t-shirts Once upon a time, in a galaxy known as Union City, there was the Union City Fire Department where my father Albert worked for 30 years on 16th Street and New York Avenue. My Uncle Nick retired from the firehouse on 29th and Central Ave. In 1999, according to their website, "The Union City Fire Department, with 100 firefighters located on four firehouses throughout the city, joined in a historic merger with three other North Hudson towns in January, 1999 to form North Hudson Regional Fire & Rescue." But the memories of the 'The Union City Fire Department" remain. Retired Captain Orlando Trujillo captured those memories on a deep blue t-shirt with the embroidered UCFD patch on the left side, expecting to fill the desires of a few friends and alumni. He sold 132!
