let's let this happen at the tactical level. let's let them move in. maybe they were just waiting to see how fast prigozhin would move and how quickly he would move up this highway possibly toward moscow. >> so what changed is there was a major threat to putin's leadership, perhaps the most serious threat in 20 years. it looks to be over. what has not changed is the battle is still raging here along this border. by the way, russian defenses there, which are multi-layered, full of minefields here, a whole host of measures designed to repel ukrainian attacks, that hasn't changed. but does it still provide an opportunity given questions about leadership, unit cohesion, will to fight? >> absolutely because what will happen with the russians, you know, if they're looking at this in a weakened state, they're not manning the trenches. they're not manning the tank traps. they're not manning some of the other areas that they would need to man in order to prevent the ukrainians from moving forward. there have been about 20 engagements in this area over the last 48 hours.
>> absolutely. you look at performance on the battlefield, the one group that really seems to have made a difference in favor of the russians has been the wagner group. and the way in which they are trying to handle this insurrection and in essence paper over things by putting wagner group members into the russian military is going to be really detrimental, i think, in the long run for the russian military. on the one hand, the mercernaries will probably gain a lot of respect from the personnel in the regular army of russia, but on the other hand, they are also known for their very brutal methods. they are going to enforce discipline in a way that they are not used to, even though the russian military is very brutal in that regard as well. so it's going to, i think, cause a lot of friction at the tactical level and unit cohesion, which is very important in warfare is something that is definitely

capables. they were running out of fuel because they hadn't factored in fueling the vehicles, they were running out of ammunition. they hadn't factored that in. their command and control was faulty. by that, i mean the ability to direct moments in the field. the other thing is how poorly they were at integrating air and ground. so russian aircraft and air force commanders making decisions completely independent of what their army commanders are trying to do on the ground. there was no synergy there. i would tell you this, here we are a year later, and they still are suffering those same problems. they still haven't solved logistics and their command and control is not where it needs to be or where you would expect it to be after a year of war. unit cohesion, moral. i've said it before. putin is changing journals as often as i change my socks.
