The city of Lubbock and United Supermarkets announced changes to their vaccination clinics this week as federal officials recommended a temporary stop to administering the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine. The Lubbock Health Department was planning to give away 5,000 doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center this week. United Supermarkets was going to offer the Johnson & Johnson vaccine at their pop-up clinic at the United Supermarkets Arena on Thursday, where 1,200 doses were given away last week during a similar event. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday they are recommending a pause in the use of the single-dose Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine out of an abundance of caution while an investigation is conducted into reports of apparently rare, potentially dangerous blood clots. ....

Participants in the clinic should plan for a second dose of the Moderna vaccine in four weeks. Those that are lucky enough to be near another provider with shots available are relying on neighborly generosity encouraged but not mandated by the state to inoculate front-line workers, who are sometimes dealing with overflow patients from urban areas alongside their own coronavirus patients. Subscribe But many small, rural providers don t have neighbors with doses to spare, leaving them waiting or scrambling to find vaccine for their most high-risk front-line health workers, even as other counties have reportedly distributed excess vaccine doses to politicians and healthy members of the public. ....
