Bradford cancer survivor celebrates landmark birthday she thought she's never see

A BRADFORD cancer survivor is this week celebrating both her 21st birthday – which falls on the day before World Cancer Day – and being free of the disease.
Emma Harling, 20, who lives in Burley-in-Wharfedale, is urging everyone to show solidarity with other people diagnosed with cancer by backing Cancer Research UK’s campaign for World Cancer Day and calls for everyone to join her by donating or wearing the charity’s Unity Band on February 4.
The Unity Band is available in three different colours – pink, navy and blue. It can be worn in memory of a loved one, to celebrate people who’ve overcome cancer or in support of those going through treatment. ....

Ashington mum diagnosed with cancer for second time

Lisa Breeze has created Team Susie to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
Lisa Breeze was diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2018, undergoing successful treatment, but unfortunately in last September was told she had cancer again.
The mum-of-two underwent a single mastectomy during the November lockdown and has just started hormone therapy injections to help stop any cancer cells growing.
Lisa, 46, said: “Getting the news that you have cancer at any time is horrendous, but in the middle of a pandemic when you can’t see consultants face to face for all your appointments has just been awful.
I was sat in the car park at Flamingo Land on the phone to the oncology consultant being told I would need to have an urgent bone MRI the next day because the results of other tests were bad.” ....

World Cancer Day 2021: Norfolk women share their experiences

On the 10th anniversary of her mastectomy, and at the same age as her aunt was when she died, Eleanor said she believed the procedure saved her life.
Eleanor Howie, left, and sister Francesca both had preventative surgery after being told there was a very high risk they would get breast cancer.

She said: Before Angelina Jolie talked publicly about her faulty BRCA1 gene, there was very little information on preventative surgery, especially for women who were in their early 20s like me and Francesca.
Psychologically, preventative surgery was very difficult for me because I had a healthy body and yet I was subjecting myself to this very invasive surgery which would change my life and my relationship with my body forever. ....
