'More male teachers needed at primary level'

More male teachers are needed at the primary level in Jamaica as part of the solution to encourage more boys to focus on education, says attorney-at-law and entrepreneur Dr Velma Brown Hamilton.
The call to increase the number of men in the classroom is not new, but Brown Hamilton says the coronavirus pandemic presents an opportunity to address the problem.
The former teacher and parish judge (resident magistrate) says the dominance of women in higher education could have long-term negative effects on the development of society.
“The low level of enrollment of males in tertiary education in Jamaica is a problem with far reaching implications which needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency”, Brown Hamilton said, noting that 70 per cent of tertiary students are females. ....
