Production, Demand for Myanmar Opium Tanks on Rise of Synthetics in SE Asia: Report

The expansion and diversification of Southeast Asia’s synthetic drug market last year has led to a further decline in the production and demand for opium in Myanmar, although crime rings that traffic heroin continued to generate substantial profits, fueling conflict, a United Nations report said Thursday.
According to the report by the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), titled “Myanmar Opium Survey: Cultivation, Production and Implications,” a downward trend that began in 2015 continued last year, when poppy farmers saw incomes decline due to trade disruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
“Opium-dependent regions and communities are being impacted by changes in the drug economy,” UNODC Country Manager for Myanmar, Benedikt Hofmann, said in a statement accompanying the release of the report in Bangkok. ....

The European Union (EU) and Sri Lanka held their 23rd meeting of the Joint Commission on 25 January 2021, via video conference. This was the first Joint Commission under the new leadership in both the European Union and Sri Lanka.
The Joint Commission meeting, held in a cordial and open atmosphere wih the EU and Sri Lanka exchanging views on a wide array of subjects, reaffirming the deep cooperation ties and the willingness to strengthen the relationship between the people of the EU and Sri Lanka further.

Thirty-three Thai policeman and state officials are being investigated for engaging in people smuggling along the Thai-Myanmar border or doing nothing to stop the practice, local authorities say.
Of the accused, over 20 are police officers who stand accused of aiding the cross-border smuggling of migrant workers on behalf of businesses that employ migrant laborers illegally. ....

During the 2015 face-off between members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria and the Nigerian Army, which resulted in a blood bath that snuffed the life out of several people in what was tagged Zaria Massacre by the media, the distinction between the duties of the Nigerian Police and that of their military counterparts came to question.
