The Upper Loup Natural Resources District in Thedford, Neb., caught the attention of cattle producers last week. The taxpayer funded district ran an Earth Day feature in their newsletter that urged people to commit to meatless meals in an effort to conserve water. At the request of several members, Elysabeth Kierl, manager of the Sandhills Cattle Association said she penned a letter to the NRD and area newspapers about the misstep. Darwin was born May 14, 1932 at the home of Harry and Eva Frey in Stapleton. He graduated in 1950 from Baker Rural High School and enlisted in the United States Air Force. Darwin served during the Korean War as an aerial gunner on a B-29 bomber flying out of Okinawa. He was decorated with the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters.
