COVID clinic for MTU students to proceed | News, Sports, Jobs

HOUGHTON – A COVID-19 vaccine clinic restricted to Michigan Technological University students next week will go on as scheduled, the organizer said Thursday.
The three-day clinic, put on by Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center (UGL), had originally been slated to use the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, prior to the federal pause this week after cases of rare and severe blood clots — six out of about 7 million vaccines given.
Instead, the clinic will use the Moderna vaccine, said Michaela McKeen, outreach and communications manager for UGL. As it is a two-dose clinic, UGL will offer a second dose 28 days later.

County OKs purchase for potential jail site | News, Sports, Jobs

HOUGHTON — Houghton County has a new site for a potential jail.
Tuesday, the board approved purchasing the First Apostolic Lutheran Church property on Sharon Avenue for $1.1 million. The board discussed the purchase in closed session prior to the vote.
The terms of when Houghton County would be able to move onto the site still need to be finalized in the purchase agreement, Vice Chairman Tom Tikkanen said.
Board members and the public toured the church site last month prior to a board work session. The congregation plans to build a bigger church on Gundlach Road.
The 14,000-square-foot building would be planned to house the sheriff’s office, work camp, district court, and potentially offices such as the county clerk. A new county jail would be built on land behind the church, partially overlapping with the current parking lot.

Lorinser staying with health department | News, Sports, Jobs

MARQUETTE — Dr. Bob Lorinser will continue as medical director for the Marquette County Health Department.
Lorinser, who took over the reins as director in November following the resignation of Dr. Kevin Piggott, earlier this year had indicated he was resigning from the position.
However, in a Monday email to The Mining Journal, Lorinser said he plans to serve as director for “hopefully a long time.”
As of Sunday, though, he stepped down as medical director for the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department, the Dickinson-Iron District Health Department and Public Health, Delta & Menominee Counties.
What drove his decision to stay with the MCHD?

Local superintendents: Numbers don't justify two-week pause locally | News, Sports, Jobs

gneese@mininggazette.com
HOUGHTON — With local COVID-19 numbers well below the state average, local superintendents said at this point they are not going along with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s request this morning for voluntary two-week pauses on youth sports and in-person instruction in high schools.
Whitmer also asked residents to avoid indoor dining for two weeks during her press conference Friday, which comes as the state has emerged as cases statewide have skyrocketed, aided by the emergence of more contagious variants.
“That’s the nature of this virus,” she said. “The second we let our guard down, it comes roaring back. Luckily we can put it all behind us once and for all if we get vaccinated. But we can’t get complacent in the meantime.”
