The Supreme Court on Wednesday gave its verdict on the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Prelims 2021 extra attempt.
Dismissing the petition seeking a second shot at the civil service examination due to the Covid-19 pandemic and age bar, the apex court has said that no extra chance will be given to the UPSC candidates who exhausted their last attempt in October 2020.

Plea in SC by age-barred UPSC aspirants seeking extra chance dismissed

Additional Solicitor General S.V. Raju, representing the Centre, had submitted before the top court that initially the government was not willing to give an extra chance, but it mellowed its stand after a suggestion from the bench.

UPSC 2021: Big setback for aspirants as Supreme Court dismisses plea seeking extra attempt

The petition sought relaxation for UPSC aspirants who exhausted their last attempt in October 2020. The petitioners cited difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting lockdown to make their case for an extra attempt. They argued that their preparation was hampered because of the pandemic.

Civil Services extra attempt not for those age-barred: SC told

The Centre on Tuesday told the Supreme Court that it is not in favour of one-time relaxation to UPSC exam aspirants who are age-barred, as it will be discriminatory to other candidates.
