Itâs a frequent sight downtown to see Auburn University students close to graduation donning their caps and gowns for a photo shoot in front of the War Eagle mural on South College Street across from Samford Park. Itâs even become something of a tradition. Auburn graduates and residents may soon get the opportunity to take selfies or photos in front of other murals as well, as the city of Auburn has been busy working toward laying the foundation for the creation of a public art program that would address everything from murals to sculptures, establish a Public Art Commission and look to liven up some of the buildings around town. ....
Pratt Tribune The Barron Theater remains an iconic landmark and a hub of Pratt activities in the 21st Century, hosting weekly youth group meetings, weekend movie showings and business and pleasure meetings for groups of all sizes. Built in 1930 to accommodate both stage and film, the former wildly popular WWII GI entertainment venue (for soldiers stationed at the Pratt Army Air Field north of town) has seen minimal changes during required structural improvements over time, but Barron Theater Development Director Sheryl White said she is now hoping the community will come together to raise funds for needed bathroom and carpet updates. ....
SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – The Central San Diego Black Chamber of Commerce and The San Diego Union-Tribune officially recognized RISE San Diego as the city’s Black-Owned Business of the Year. One ongoing initiative at RISE is their State of Urban Neighborhoods (SUNRISE) webinar series in which community members join together to discuss topics relating to systemic oppression in San Diego’s Black community. In the webinar series, members work towards policy changes that transform underrepresented communities. Tony Young, current President and CEO of RISE San Diego, was the first African American budget chair in San Diego and the first African American president of city council in a major Californian city. ....
