Early detection of lung cancer in older smokers appears to be more effective than quitting. Earlier diagnosis via CT scan offers a better chance that treatment will work.

On February 10, 2022, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced its updated lung cancer screening eligibility guidelines for people covered by Medicare. As a result, most private insurance plans are required to cover lung cancer screening for those now at high risk under the U.S. Preventative Services Taskforce (USPSTF) criteria. This recommendation nearly doubled the number of individuals eligible for screening by lowering the recommended age range to begin screening from 55 to  50, as well as reducing the minimum pack-year smoking history from 30 to 20.

The organization is now recommending nearly five million more adults who smoke or used to smoke to be tested.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) has announced new guidelines for lung cancer screenings. Published in the ACS journal "CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians" on Wednesday, the advisory reconsiders those who are at high risk for developing lung cancer and which individuals should be screened each year. The ACS now recommends annual low-dose CT scans
