Foreign investors are now allowed to establish entertainment venues in China without investment restrictions or local partners, according to new legal amendments.
This opens the doors to future wholly-foreign owned cinemas in the world’s largest film market. It also could potentially be big news for U.S. entertainment companies looking to operate theme parks in the country. Previous rules required them to partner up to form joint ventures with local firms, as did Disney did to open its lucrative Shanghai Disneyland theme park and as Universal was obliged to do for its nearly completed theme park near Beijing.

China Orders New Cinema Closures Amid Rise in COVID-19 Cases

China has shuttered a portion of cinemas in top movie-going province Guangdong after what reports said may be the country’s first community outbreak of the Indian COVID-19 variant. Reports did not state exactly how many cinemas have been affected.
The theater closures come days after U.S. cinema chains, including AMC, Regal and Cinemark announced they would no longer require fully vaccinated guests to wear face masks. China’s preventative measures come in response to 50 new cases logged nationwide over Sunday and Monday. In comparison, more than 5,600 new COVID-19 cases emerged in the U.S. on Monday alone.

“F9” downshifted dramatically from a furious start in Chinese cinemas a week ago to a more pedestrian $20.5 million second weekend. But that was still good enough to take first place ahead of two significant foreign releases.
The “Fast & Furious” franchise title lost 84% of its pace on its second lap, compared with a blistering opening weekend of $137 million. That gives it a cumulative total of $186 million, according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway.

Opening its campaign in second place was Japanese animation title “Stand By Me Doraemon 2,” which earned $16.3 million in three days.
