where a former uva football player accused of killing five of his teammates. alexia williams is live with the details tonight. reporter: thanks, laura. i m here on grounds at uva. it s very quiet after police said that christopher darnell jones jr. shot and killed three uva football players on a bus last night. the victims names are laval james jr., devin chandler and desean perry. the uva community trying to come to term with the three classmates. the uva police chief talked about the suspect, chris jones jr. mr. jones came to the attention of the university of virginia s threat assessment
momentarily. let s walk through everything we know so far. it s been about 12 hours that that lockdown was on place on campus and they said that they re searching for christopher darnell jones jr. we know that he s a student. we know he at least played football for at least one year. that s according to the campus website. and as you mentioned, three people are dead and two others are injured. of course, we re working to learn more. their identifies have not yet been released. we ve been told that uva police are not just assisting but atf, washington is on we know that virginia it looks at though i m sorry to interrupt you. it looks as though the press conference is now about to begin. let s go to that. good morning, everyone. i m jim ryan. the president of the university of virginia. this is a sad, shocking and tragic day for our uva community. i will describe briefly what we know at this point and then turn things over to the chief.
charlottesville, virginia. joe, i wonder what more we know about the suspect and the progress of the manhunt. reporter: well, jim, the suspect obviously is said to be a student here at uva, also a football player on the 2018 team. not clear, of course, that he actually played in games, but that s what we know about him. his name is christopher darnell jones jr. and the search continues for him. authorities just the last communication we got from them texted out to people in the uva community said this, the law enforcement search on and around uva grounds continues. remain sheltered in place. expect increased law enforcement presence. and that is certainly what we have seen here on the campus as the search continues. it all happened around 10:30
