Eclipse presentation ahead of April 8 showcases human attribution of eclipses over time

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) As the tri-state is less than a month away from its total solar eclipse on April 8, the Evansville-Vanderburgh Public Library Central Branch is helping kick off the eclipse countdown with a "Eclipse and Humans: Science, Shock and Awe" presentation from University of Southern Indiana Professor Dr. Kent Scheller. Dr. Scheller says eclipses have surely affected humans and animals over thousands of years, but his presentation talked about how humans have attributed eclipses over to reasons other than science. Dr. Scheller presents that some people before the 1700s believed these eclipses were something legendary. "When your sun disappears and you don't know why and you hold the sun in high regard you thought maybe the gods were angry or dragons were eating the sun, or these mythical wolves were devouring the sun in a hunt," Dr. Scheller says.
