Roundup: Bad Axe, Laker, Ubly, CC boys pick up wins Saturday FacebookTwitterEmail BOYS BASKETBALL Bad Axe 68, Vassar 25 BAD AXE The Bad Axe boys basketball team returned to its winning ways on Saturday afternoon, overpowering the visiting Vassar Vulcans on its way to a 68-25 victory. The Hatchets (3-1, 2-1) controlled the game from the opening whistle, hitting shots from the perimeter and limiting Vassar’s offensive opportunities. The Vulcans (4-1, 2-1) labored to keep up with the Bad Axe offense, which used its speed to convert turnovers into easy points. In the first quarter, the Hatchets outscored Vassar 28-4, and Bad Axe led 38-14 heading into halftime. ....

Leading the way for the Pirates (1-1) were Maya Pfaff with 13 points, Mariah Jahn and Josie Kozfkay with 7 points each, Maddie Geiger and Paige Anderson with 6 points each, Brenna Bischer with 5 and Leandra Wolschlager with 4. Pirates head coach Jim Tamlyn said the condensed season has started with a hectic pace that won’t let up until the season is over and his team is dealing with a short bench, but he and his players are happy to be back playing and they are looking forward to their matchup with Ubly on Monday night. He has two new varsity players in Bischer and freshman Jahn, and he was pleased with how the Pirates played as team on Saturday. ....
Boys roundup: Red Hawks, Warriors, Pirates pick up wins FacebookTwitterEmail North Huron 77, Bay City All Saints 68 BAY CITY The North Huron varsity boys basketball team opened the 2020-2021 season with a 77-68 road win at Bay City All Saints on Friday night. After staking themselves to a 50-42 lead at halftime, the Warriors held steady in the second half as the Cougars fought to get back in the game. Noah Koth led the Warriors with 24 points, and Will Case was close behind with 22. Mason Brown had 11 points, Ryan Schorno had 8 and Joe Weiss had 5. North Huron head coach Matt Shears said the Warriors had the chance to “knock some of the rust off” on Friday night after being sidelined by the suspension of contact sports in Michigan. North Huron’s offense was clicking at the beginning of the game, he said, but the lack of playing time became apparent as fouls and turnovers piled up. ....
Hoops roundup: Laker, Harbor Beach boys pick up wins FacebookTwitterEmail Laker too much for Sandusky PIGEON The Laker varsity boys basketball team opened the 2020-2021 season at home on Wednesday night with a 57-39 victory over the Sandusky Redskins. After leading 14-10 at the end of the first quarter, the Lakers would go into halftime with a 24-19 lead. Sandusky (1-1) hung around in the third quarter, staying withing striking distance of Laker and trailing 35-28 heading into the fourth. Laker (1-0) would blow the game wide open with a 22-point fourth quarter and lock up the win. Leading the way for Laker was Sawyer Kozfkay with 18 points. Kozfkay was a perfect three-for-three from behind the three-point line. Also making big contributions were Anthony Sheridan with 11 points and Hunter Krohn with 10. ....
