Vermont unemployment recipients to get identity theft coverage due to data breach

MONTPELIER â The state, in response to a data breach that led to personally identifying information including names, addresses and Social Security numbers being sent to the wrong addresses, will provide all 2020 unemployment insurance recipients with identity theft protection, Gov. Phil Scott said Tuesday.
In the meantime, Labor Commissioner Michael Harrington told the Senate Economic Development, Housing and General Affairs Committee that the department has stepped up quality assurance steps to make sure when 1099-G tax forms are resent later this month, there are no more mistakes.
The state is in process of recalling thousands of 1099-G forms sent to unemployment benefit claimants after it was discovered that names, addresses and Social Security numbers of claimants were sent to the wrong addresses. MONTPELIER â The hot seat at the Vermont Department of Labor got hotter on Wednesday, as Gov. Phil Scott appointed one of his top advisers as a deputy to Labor Commissioner Michael Harrington and a task force to address the problem.
Meanwhile, state House and Senate lawmakers sought more complete information from Harrington about what they should tell constituents concerned about the risk of identity theft as the result of corrupted tax forms sent to thousands of unemployment claimants. ....

Labor Department processing 1099 problems, and warns of delayed payments

Vermont Business Magazine The Vermont Department of Labor is still in the process of sorting out an error in the printing and mailing of some 55,000 1099-G forms. Some of the forms were sent to the wrong address, thus potentially exposing personal information, including Social Security numbers.
Labor Commissioner Michael Harrington is urging that recipients not open the 1099 letters and to keep them safe. He wants all 1099s to be returned and all those who were mailed 1099s will be issued a self-addressed stamped envelope in which to return them.
Some recipients may have received more than one 1099 because of the nature of the new pandemic benefits issued by the state and federal governments last year. None of the Regular UI 1099s have been issued. ....

Labor Department issues recall of all 1099s because of mailing error

by Timothy McQuiston, Vermont Business Magazine The Vermont Department of Labor is aware of a mailing and printing process error that impacts 1099-G tax documents that were mailed on Friday and Saturday (January 29 – 30).
If you received a 1099 from the Department of Labor, they are asking that you
DO NOT OPEN IT. VDOL will send you a self-addressed stamped envelope in which to return it. VDOL suspects a printing error resulted in some people getting someone s else s information. This could have occurred even if the address information appears correct.
If you have already opened the 1099-G, please put it in a secure place and wait for the SASE in order to return it (them). Do not discard or destroy it. A new 1099-G will be issued. ....
