Art and Diplomacy: Japanese Objects from the Château de Fontainebleau

This display at the Château de Fontainebleau presents an exceptional group of diplomatic gifts, offered by Shogun Iemochi to Napoleon III between 1860–64, shortly after Japan opened to the West in 1854. Among them are a group of 10 exquisite kakemono paintings on silk, a folding screen with a scene of a horseman among misty mountains painted on gold leaf, and cabinets with intricate lacquer panelling inlaid – in short, a collection fit for an emperor. The exhibition runs from 4 June to 20 September; find out more from the Château de Fontainebleau’s website.

It was conceived by Giovanni Grimani as an homage to his grandfather Antonio, first doge of the family, and completed in 1568; decked out with alabaster, serpentine and porphyry, the room housed part of the famed Grimani collection of Greek and Roman sculpture. From 19 May–27 November 2022, the room returns to (something like) its former glory – new analysis of Giovanni Grimani’s inventories and other historical materials have allowed curators at the Museum of the Palazzo Grimani to relocate 20 class...

Eileen Agar: Angel of Anarchy | Apollo Magazine

Eileen Agar played a key role in the Surrealist movement during the 1930s – this large survey at the Whitechapel Gallery (19 May–29 August) shows the range of her influences. She drew on everything from Cubism to classical sculpture in works that ranged from painting to found-object assemblages. With some 150 works, the display traces her seven-decade career from her early years studying at the Slade through to her inclusion in André Breton’s ‘International Surrealist Exhibition’ of 1936, and the prolific and varied output that followed. Find out more from the Whitechapel’s webs...
