11 Lakes area schools added to the state's COVID-19 list Thursday

Eleven schools in the northwest Minnesota lakes area have been added to the Minnesota Department of Health's COVID-19 list, which indicates five or more students and staff have tested positive for the virus in the last 14 days. Currently, Detroit Lakes High School has six cases between students and staff, but masking requirements won't be implemented until the transmission rate rises above 3%, according to the district's mitigation plan. No other schools in the Detroit Lakes School District have more than five cases.

Americans are going back to one of their favorite pastimes: store shopping. With vaccinations rolling out and shoppers freer to go out maskless, retailers from Walmart to Macy’s are seeing an eager return to their stores after months of watching their customers focus on online buying during the pandemic. Shoppers return less than when buying online. And store customers tend to do more impulse buying than online.
Three months after saying that comparable store sales may actually fall in 2021, Best Buy  released a much more optimistic outlook for the year after reporting booming sales in the first quarter. The Minnesota-based Best Buy said that its quarterly sales were helped by government stimulus payments, a short-term windfall, but it also believes that customers will continue to depend on the company’s services and products even after the pandemic eases.

Grand Forks School Board members during a special meeting Thursday heard the rationale behind an array of recommendations by its Facilities Task Force, charting the district’s future.
The task force’s recommendations include consolidating Valley Middle School and West, Wilder and Winship elementary schools and replacing them with a K-8 school on the city’s north side.
The task force recommended that Valley and West schools should close because renovation is no longer considered to be a viable option.
