"The impugned order passed by the WTM dated November 27, 2020, against Prannoy Roy and Radhika Roy in appeal no. 557 of 2020 and 558 of 2020 cannot be sustained and is quashed," SAT presiding officer justice Tarun Agarwala and technical member Meera Swarup said in order on Thursday.
The securities appellate tribunal (SAT) on Thursday quashed the insider trading order issued by Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) against New Delhi Television Ltd (NDTV)'s former promoters Dr Prannoy Roy and Radhika Roy. In November 2020, SEBI had asked the Roys to disgorge Rs16.97 crore, the money earned through insider trades while barring NDTV and the company's key executives from the securities market.
The Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) on Thursday quashed a Sebi order that barred NDTV founders Prannoy Roy and Radhika Roy from the securities market for two years in an insider trading case. However, the appellate tribunal partly set aside an order against Vikramaditya Chandra, the group's chief executive officer during the relevant period, and remitted the matter back to Sebi to decide the issue. It further said that trades executed by Chandra during PSI-3 (price-sensitive information) are required to be reconsidered, according to the order passed by SAT.
The SAT has concluded that the information said to have been possessed by the Roys when the traded in the NDTV shares was not price sensitive, contrary to the SEBI findings on this aspect.
