Karnataka: Private bus operators rule the roost as strike drags on | Mangaluru News

With very few state transport buses on roads, commuters are being forced to shell out more for every ride.
BENGALURU: The indefinite transport strike in the state will enter its 11th day on Saturday. Bang in the midst of a pandemic, the prolonged agitation is causing severe hardships to commuters, who are being forced to rely on private operators for emergency travel.
The government and the striking employees have been unable to find common ground to tide over the crisis.
While there are complaints galore against private operators of poor frequency and for carrying excess passengers or charging extra, transport department officials are turning a blind eye to violations. Officials fear private operators might not run any buses if action is initiated against them. Many poor patients travelling from other districts to Bengaluru are finding it difficult to visit hospitals due to lack of buses operated by STUs.

Chief Minister to take final call
Deputy Chief Minister and Transport Minister Laxman Savadi, on Thursday, hinted at a ticket fare hike for buses run by Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC). The minister said the pandemic and fuel price increase had led to huge losses for the corporation, following which BMTC had proposed a hike in the range of 18-20%. The move comes amidst a Bharat Bandh call by transporters and traders over fuel price hike.

toolkit case: Disha Ravi supporters welcome bail order, say it vindicates people's right to dissent

Toolkit case: Delhi court grants bail to activist Disha Ravi
People across Bengaluru hailed the order of a Delhi court to grant bail to Disha Ravi. The ‘swiftness’ with which the court granted bail has raised hopes that Ravi would emerge unscathed, they said. Ravi’s mother Manjula said she was happy and the bail order had firmed up her faith in the law. The Delhi Police had arrested Ravi on February 13.
Activist Mukund Gowda, Ravi’s fellow volunteer at Fridays for Future, said he saw the bail as a sign of victory, yet only a temporary relief in a long-drawn fight. “The court granting her bail showed there was not an iota of truth in sedition charges against her and the police’s attempt to link her with Khalistan elements is baseless,” he said.

Disha Ravi's parents are distraught, says advocate- The New Indian Express

Express News Service
BENGALURU: Climate activist Disha Ravi’s parents were “extremely emotionally distraught” after a Delhi court remanded her to judicial custody for three days on Friday. “Her parents thought that on the completion of Disha’s five days in police custody, she would be released and she could return home. They are laypersons and don’t understand the difference between police and judicial custody. Their anxiety has only heightened after she was remanded to judicial custody,” said Disha’s family friend and advocate R Prasanna.
Her arrest in the farmers’ protest toolkit case has sent shock waves and led to angry reactions from activists, students, human rights organisations among others. Prasanna said that he was expecting that the court would send Disha to judicial custody, given the “nature of the offence she has been charged with, the gravity of the situation and the hype that has been created around it”.

Activists, student community in shock
Disha A. Ravi, 22, who was arrested by the Delhi police in connection with the Greta Thunberg ‘toolkit’ case on Saturday, has been a prominent young voice on environmental issues in the city for nearly three years.
In 2019, Ms. Disha, then a student of Mount Carmel College, was one of the co-founders of Fridays For Future (FFF), India, an initiative led by Ms. Thunberg. One of her friends, who did not wish to be named, said that as she hailed from an agricultural family, concern for the environment and climate change came naturally to her. Ms. Disha also saw the ongoing farmers’ protests as part of the climate change crisis, sources said.
